Old black and white photo of men splitting slate at Dinorwig Quarry

Museums

National Slate Museum, Llanberis

Set in Victorian wokshops of the old Dinorwig Quarry (which closed in 1969) the museum provides an insight into what it was like to work in the quarry, including demonstrations of slate-splitting. Don't miss the series of cottages through the ages. There's a nice cafe too!

The hospital on the shore of Lake Padarn was custom built to serve the men frequently injured in the dangerous quarry.

Thanks to our good neighbour Selwyn for the use of the photograph above showing his father at work trimming roof slates in the quarry.
